Of course, she didn’t expect anyone to reply right away two hours before they usually reported to the room for the joke their daily job had become. Maybe they’d forget about the busted TV when they read a text like that, but in the meantime, Idina meant to figure out what the hell was going on.

First, she stopped by Captain Irons’ office, knowing the chances of finding him there were already slim to none. Her OIC wasn’t in there, which didn’t exactly mean anything. However, his desk was gone. So were the few neatly organized binders on the wire shelves bolted into the walls. More boxes of junk had replaced them.

Idina slammed the door shut and hurried down the hall. It would take her at least twenty minutes to cross the entire building to the front lobby, but if she could count on one thing at HHC, it was that Sergeant Williston would be behind her desk at slightly after oh seven hundred, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and cheery as ever.

Never thought I’d think this, but I seriously hope she’s there. Forget what I told Hines about meeting with Richard in The Twilight Zone. Hands down, this takes the fucking cake.

She didn’t pass anyone else on her way to the lobby, and she didn’t get a single text response from anyone in her unit. She nearly sighed with relief when she found Williston sitting behind the front desk as she’d expected.

The sergeant flashed her a brilliant grin, and for the first time, Idina was insanely grateful to be the target of that smile.

“Morning, Sergeant.”

“Private Moorfield.” Williston folded her hands on her desk’s surface and kept smiling. “Good morning. I’m glad you showed up. Saves me the trouble of having to hunt you down.”

“What?” Idina stopped at the front desk as the other woman turned sideways in her chair to rifle through a stack of papers.

“One moment. I’ll find it.”

“Sergeant, do you have any idea where Triple-S is?”

Williston paused and looked blankly up at her. “I’m sorry?”

“I mean, everyone’s gone, and now I’m wondering what happened to the supply room.”

“Um…it’s full of supplies? Because it’s a supply room.”

Idina opened her mouth to argue that the back room in the HHC building was the break room and makeshift headquarters for her entire unit, but she bit it back.

It’s not anymore. It’s a supply room again. What the hell is this?

With wide eyes, Williston swiveled slowly forward in her desk chair again, eyeing Idina sidelong the entire time. “Are you feeling all right, Private? You look a little pale this morning.”

“I’m fine. Thanks.” Idina couldn’t think of anything else to add because she couldn’t figure out what was going on.

“Good. Either way, you have new orders, and I’m pretty sure looking a little under the weather isn’t a good excuse for skipping out on them.”

“What?”

“Came in about an hour ago.” Williston slid the papers she’d been looking for across the desk and kept grinning.

Idina snatched up the paperwork for her new orders and couldn’t believe what she saw.
